A further block at the southern boundary of the property has been sold and will be the home of a new and expanded Extendicare facility in Port Stanley. The following information was received from Extendicare in April 2021.
The Ontario government recently announced that they would be allocating 11,707 new long-term spaces across 80 different projects in Ontario. Of the 80 projects, we will be getting one in our community of Port Stanley! This is welcome news for our community and for the current residents and staff of Extendicare Port Stanley. Extendicare is investing to build a brand new long-term care home next to the current building on East Road. This new location will be home to 128 residents, helping to address the waitlist for long-term care placements in our region. When it is completed, the 60 residents from the current building will move into this new home and there will be an additional 68 long-term spaces available. In the upgraded Extendicare Port Stanley home, all residents will have their own bedroom and there will be added space for restorative care and physiotherapy. The home design will feature, self-contained home areas with dining rooms, activity space and access to outdoor space. This modern building will meet the needs of long-term care residents today and into the future. Extendicare is currently working through the municipal and provincial approval processes in support of the project and is hoping to begin construction as soon as possible.More information about Extendicare and the Port Stanley project is attached below. All single detached dwellings and semi-detached units have been sold and build out is well underway. Construction has also commenced on the condominium units which are expected to come to market in spring, 2021. It is anticipated that construction will commence on the apartment building in late 2021 or early 2022.
The developer has significant experience with seniors housing which would be a much needed addition to residential offerings in Port Stanley. The PSVA was encouraged by the developers recognition, in planning documents and at the public meeting related to this development, of the need for various housing types in our community, including those that enable seniors to age in place.
